Double action

a. Osmotic effect

Lactitol is a disaccharide polyol, produced by hydrogenation of lactose. Enzymes of the digestive tract are unable to digest lactitol, so it reaches the colon unchanged.
The laxative action of lactitol in the digestive tract is related to the osmotic properties of the undigested carbohydrate. In the colon, lactitol is fermented by the intestinal microbiota to short-chain fatty acids, which in addition to an osmotic effect may have a direct effect on gut motility and transit.

b. Prebiotic effect
