Double action

a. Osmotic effect

Lactulose is a disaccharide derived from nature, generated by an isomerisation of lactose. Enzymes from the human gut can’t digest lactulose, so it reaches the colon unchanged.

In the colon, lactulose is broken down by the saccharolytic bacteria to organic acids (lactic, formic and acetic acids) which acidify the colon content and have osmotic effect.

b. Prebiotic effect
